May the church be the place of God’s mercy and love, where everyone can feel themselves welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live according to the good life of the Gospel (Pope Francis).
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a friendly, welcoming parish in the seaside town of Herne Bay. There are a good number of young families rubbing shoulders with people who have been in the parish for decades. Our parish also has a thriving Indian community who add greatly to our understanding of the universal Church. Each Mass, too, has a dedicated welcoming team who are happy to answer your questions while handing out the hymn books.
The Parish Team consists of our parish priest Fr Mark White CP (CP stands for Passionist), an assistant priest Fr Patrick McKeown CP, our two deacons James Foley and Barry Walker and our parish sister Corrine (if you want to know what a deacon is and what they do click here).
Parish Pastoral Council
The PPC, as they are known, comprises the parish team and other members drawn from the parish. It is configured into three committees - Word, Worship and Welcome - and undertakes practical activities to enhance the atmosphere, fabric and spiritual life of the parish.
The church, the courtyard toilet block and the Retreat Hall are all wheelchair accessible (the ramp to the church is a little steep but there is always someone on hand to help). For the hard of hearing there is a T-Loop installed in the church.
The 9.30am Mass is the one favoured by families with young children. That said, at any of our Masses you should receive a warm welcome. Soft toys and books are on hand for the children and we are all used to a little noise. For more on what is on offer for families, children and our youth visit the Families page.
The Herne Bay Catholic Social Club
Next door to the church is our social club which is a hub of activity. There is a fully licensed bar, pool and snooker tables and regular events such as darts, bingo and quizzes. You can contact the club on 01227 373336.
Our parish has a well-stocked repository from which you can pick up prayer cards and books as well as other cards and gifts. The repository also stocks the latest Church documents such as Evangelii Gaudium and Laudato Sii from Pope Francis.
